WHY MIDLIFE WOMEN FEEL EXHAUSTED AND WHAT HELPS
This week has been a powerful reminder of something I see often in clinic but in a completely different setting.
I spent time at the Wealthy Women CEO Conference 2026, surrounded by women building incredible businesses.
- Solopreneurs
- Entrepreneurs
- Leaders
- Network marketers
Women with vision, drive and real impact.
And you might be wondering…
Why was I there as a menopause specialist?
“Because the women in that room are the very women I support."

THE HIDDEN REALITY BEHIND HIGH-ACHIEVING WOMEN
On the surface, these women are thriving.
On the surface, these women are thriving.
They are leading teams. Growing businesses. Creating opportunities.
But behind the scenes, many are:
- exhausted
- overwhelmed
- running on empty
- struggling with sleep
- feeling mentally overloaded
There were big conversations around success, money, impact and community.
But underneath it all was something deeper:
THE HIDDEN COST OF DOING TOO MUCH.
The reminder to step out of constant doing…
and reconnect with being.
- To protect energy.
- To understand “life currency.”
- To build a life and business that supports you, not one that drains you.
And I left feeling recharged, refocused and reignited.
Because the truth is:
To support my clients properly… I have to be supported too.
THE GROWING CONVERSATION AROUND MENOPAUSE AND BURNOUT
Right now, there is an important shift happening in how we understand burnout in midlife women.
Right now, there is an important shift happening in how we understand burnout in midlife women.
For a long time, burnout has been framed as a lifestyle issue.
Too busy - Too stressed - Too much responsibility.
But what is becoming increasingly clear is this:
BURNOUT DURING MENOPAUSE IS OFTEN PHYSIOLOGICAL, NOT JUST SITUATIONAL.
Women in their 40s and 50s are navigating multiple layers at once:
- hormonal shifts
- increased stress sensitivity
- disrupted sleep
- cognitive load
- emotional pressure
All at the same time.
WHY BURNOUT FEELS DIFFERENT IN MIDLIFE
During perimenopause and menopause, the body changes how it responds to stress.
Cortisol Becomes More Sensitive
Cortisol the body’s primary stress hormone becomes more reactive and less predictable.
This means:
- stress hits harder
- recovery takes longer
- the body stays in “alert mode” for longer periods
HORMONAL CHANGES REDUCE RESILIENCE
Oestrogen and progesterone both play a role in:
Oestrogen and progesterone both play a role in:
- nervous system regulation
- mood stability
- stress buffering
As these hormones fluctuate and decline, the body has less natural resilience to stress.
SLEEP DISRUPTION COMPOUNDS EVERYTHING
Poor sleep is one of the most common menopause symptoms.
And when sleep is disrupted:
- recovery is reduced
- cortisol increases
- emotional tolerance decreases
- energy drops further
It becomes a cycle.
WHY “PUSHING THROUGH” STOPS WORKING
Many high-achieving women are used to pushing through. It has worked for years but during menopause, that strategy often stops working.
Not because you are weaker but because your body is asking for a different way of operating.
TIP OF THE WEEK: THE ENERGY AUDIT PAIN POINT
You feel constantly “on.”
Busy all day… but never truly restored.
Even rest doesn’t seem to make a difference.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
During menopause:
- cortisol becomes dysregulated
- recovery slows down
- the nervous system becomes more sensitive
So the old strategy of pushing through becomes less effective.
ONE POWERFUL SHIFT: DO AN ENERGY AUDIT
At the end of each day, ask yourself:
- What gave me energy today?
- What drained me today?
Write down three of each.
Do this for a few days and patterns will begin to appear.
THEN GENTLY ADJUST
Once you notice patterns:
- do more of what restores you
- reduce, delegate or set boundaries around what drains you
WHY THIS WORKS
Awareness reduces overload - Boundaries protect energy - Protected energy supports hormone balance.
It is not about doing less for the sake of it.
It is about doing what matters - without depleting yourself.
A DIFFERENT WAY OF LOOKING AT MENOPAUSE
This week reminded me of something important.
You can build a successful life but if your health is not supported alongside it, your body will eventually ask you to slow down and menopause is often that moment.
Not as a breakdown. But as a recalibration.
A chance to:
- reassess priorities
- protect your energy
- support your body differently
- build a way of living that actually sustains you
WHERE TO START
If you are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed or not quite like yourself, you are not alone.
Many women begin by downloading my Menopause Guide: The 5 Hidden Reasons Women Struggle Through Perimenopause and Menopause.
Inside the guide you will be invited to complete the Readiness & Symptom Snapshot, a short questionnaire that helps identify patterns in symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disruption, brain fog and anxiety.
From there, you can book a 15-minute Menopause Check-In to explore personalised support.

For women needing deeper insight, the Menopause MOT looks at hormones, sleep, stress and lifestyle together.
And for those ready for structured support, I work with women through The Menopause Vitality Reset, helping them restore energy, balance hormones and feel like themselves again.
