WHEN HEALTHY LIVING STARTS TO FEEL LIKE HARD WORK
Why the pursuit of perfect health might be adding to your menopause symptoms instead of easing them.
This week's blog comes to you from the hills of southern Spain.
Last week I was travelling through California with one lifelong friend, and this week I'm spending a few days with another.
Different countries.
Different scenery.
But somehow, we've ended up having exactly the same conversation.

WHAT IS REALLY MAKING WOMEN FEEL SO OVERWHELMED?
Of course, hormones play a part. But I think there's something else happening too. We're surrounded by advice about how we should be looking after ourselves.
Of course, hormones play a part. But I think there's something else happening too. We're surrounded by advice about how we should be looking after ourselves.
Eat perfectly.
Avoid processed food.
Cut out sugar.
Limit alcohol.
Walk 10,000 steps every day.
Lift weights.
Eat more protein.
Meditate.
Sleep for eight hours.
Track your sleep.
Track your readiness.
Track your stress.
Track… everything.
Before we know it, looking after ourselves has become another full-time job and if we don't manage it all?
We feel like we've failed.
It made me stop and think.
If chronic stress affects our hormones, gut health, blood sugar, immune system and nervous system...
What happens when the pursuit of perfect health becomes another source of chronic stress? Because here's the thing. Most of us aren't trying to become elite athletes. We're simply trying to feel well enough to enjoy our lives.
One sentence my friend Alison said this week has stayed with me: "We're not here to avoid death. We're here to live."
I thought that was such a beautiful reminder.
Yes, let's make informed choices.
Yes, let's look after ourselves.
But let's also laugh.
Spend time with friends.
Walk barefoot.
Watch the sunset.
Enjoy the occasional ice cream.
Health isn't just about adding years to life.
It's also about adding life to our years.
IN THE MENOPAUSE WORLD: PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION
One of the strongest themes emerging in menopause care is the growing recognition that chronic stress has a significant impact on how women experience menopause.
One of the strongest themes emerging in menopause care is the growing recognition that chronic stress has a significant impact on how women experience menopause.
Researchers and clinicians continue to explore how prolonged stress can influence sleep, mood, memory, energy levels and blood sugar regulation during the menopause transition.
At the same time, there's a welcome shift towards encouraging realistic, sustainable lifestyle changes rather than expecting women to achieve perfection.
Because perfection isn't the goal. Consistency is. And perhaps even more importantly...
Kindness towards ourselves.
TIP OF THE WEEK: REPLACE "SHOULD" WITH "COULD"
Pain Point
How often do you catch yourself thinking:
"I should have exercised."
"I should have eaten better."
"I should have gone to bed earlier."
That single word carries an enormous amount of pressure.
One Simple Shift
This week, try replacing should with could.
Instead of:
"I should go for a walk."
Try:
"I could go for a walk."
Instead of:
"I should eat more protein."
Try:
"I could add a little more protein today."
It's a tiny change in language, but it creates a very different feeling.
"Should" creates guilt.
"Could" creates possibility.
And possibility is far kinder to your nervous system than pressure will ever be.
Small, consistent changes almost always outperform perfect plans that leave us feeling overwhelmed.
WHY THIS MATTERS
One of the biggest lessons I've taken from the past couple of weeks is that health isn't something we're supposed to achieve perfectly.
One of the biggest lessons I've taken from the past couple of weeks is that health isn't something we're supposed to achieve perfectly.
It's something we practise.
Some days we'll move more.
Some days we'll rest more.
Some days we'll eat brilliantly.
Some days we'll enjoy the ice cream.
And that's okay.
Because caring for yourself shouldn't become another source of stress.
It should help you feel healthier, happier and more able to enjoy your life.

FINAL THOUGHT
As I sit here looking out across the Spanish hills, I'm reminded that living well isn't about perfection.
It's about finding a way of caring for yourself that feels joyful, sustainable and kind.
After all…
"We're not here to avoid death. We're here to live."
And I think that's something worth remembering.
