WHY IT HAPPENS

One of the most common things women say during perimenopause is:

“I’m exhausted… but I can’t switch off.”

They feel:
  • physically drained
  •  mentally overstimulated
  • emotionally reactive
  • unable to fully relax
This experience is often described as the “wired but tired” feeling, and it is strongly linked to nervous system changes during menopause.

WHY MENOPAUSE AFFECTS THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Hormones and the nervous system are deeply interconnected.
As oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate, several important brain systems are affected.
Lower Progesterone Reduces Calming Signals
Progesterone has a naturally calming effect on the brain.
As levels decline during menopause, the body becomes more sensitive to stress signals.

OESTROGEN INFLUENCES MOOD REGULATION
Oestrogen interacts with neurotransmitters including:

  • serotonin
  • dopamine
  • GABA
When oestrogen fluctuates, emotional stability and resilience can change.
CHRONIC STRESS ADDS ANOTHER LAYER
Many women reach midlife already carrying a heavy load:

  • careers
  • family responsibilities
  • financial pressure
  •  long-term stress
When hormonal changes are layered on top, the nervous system can remain stuck in high alert mode.

THE ROLE OF SAFE CONNECTION
One of the most powerful and often overlooked nervous system regulators is safe connection with others.
When we spend time with people we feel comfortable and emotionally safe with, the body releases oxytocin.

Oxytocin helps:

  • reduce cortisol
  • calm the nervous system
  • improve emotional resilience

ONE POWERFUL PRACTICE
Try intentionally scheduling safe space time.

  • Not networking.
  • Not obligation coffee.
  • Not productivity.
Just time with someone who knows you well enough that you don’t need to explain yourself. This kind of connection can significantly reduce stress hormone activity.

FINDING THE RIGHT SUPPORT

If the wired-but-tired feeling has become your daily normal, it may be helpful to explore what is happening in your body.
Many women start by downloading the Menopause Guide, which explains some of the hidden reasons women struggle through perimenopause and menopause.

Inside the guide you will be invited to complete the Readiness & Symptom Snapshot, which helps identify patterns in symptoms like fatigue, sleep disruption and anxiety.

From there, women can explore support through a Menopause Check-In, a deeper Menopause MOT, or my structured programme The Menopause Vitality Reset.
